A little less than five years ago, friend and frequent collaborator @jacob_kushner brought me on board for an assignment about LGBTQ refugees living in Nairobi who had come from all over East Africa. We left that story feeling like there was so much more to see and say about this topic, and over the next few years, with support from the @pulitzercenter, the @magentafoundation and others, we traveled to Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya’s north, to Kampala, Uganda’s capital, and to Mbale, in Eastern Uganda, to try and get a better sense of what the reality was for the LGBTQ community in the region. We met some of the most profoundly vibrant, joyous and resilient people I’ve ever known, published more than 15 stories and exhibited the work in the US and Europe. Out today, I’m thrilled to share the culmination of that work: the book, “This is How the Heart Beats,” with forewards from LGBTQ activists Ruth Muganzi and Cynthia Ndikumana, designed by the wonderful people at @ewsdesign and published by @thenewpress. El fotógrafo presenta su serie LGBT que nos recuerda que en varias naciones de África incluso existen penas de muerte para las personas LGBT como en Kenia y Uganda que han intentado pasar leyes que llaman a matar a los gays.

África del Este está compuesta por 18 países: Etiopía, Eritrea, Yibuti, Somalia, Madagascar, Mauricio, Comoras, Seychelles, Uganda, Ruanda, Burundi, Kenia, Tanzania, Sudán del Sur, Mozambique, Malaui, Zambia y Zimbabue.

Esta subregión limita al norte con África del Norte, al noreste con el mar Rojo y el golfo de Adén, al este con el océano Índico, al sur con África austral y al oeste con África Central.

El libro incluye textos del periodista Jacob Kushner, de la activista queer ugandesa Ruth Muganzi y de Cynthia Ndikumana, activista trans de Burundi.

Jake Naughton es fotoperiodista y colaborador frecuente de diversos medios como: El New York Times, Atavist, BuzzFeed News, NPR y VICE es miembro fundador de Black Box, una cooperativa para proyectos documentales visuales, y vive en Ciudad de México.
